While the Los Angeles Kings are not winning many NHL games this season, they are taking part in some high-scoring contests recently.
The Kings have pounded the OVER in all five of their previous games, and have allowed an average of 4.4 goals per game while scoring 3.2 goals per outing. The Kings play a free-wheeling style of hockey, and they also are very young at both the defense and goaltending positions.
Montreal, Tampa Bay and St. Louis have all gone OVER in four of their past five games. The Canadiens are scoring four goals a night, powered by their league-leading power-play unit. The Lightning are also scoring a lot with 3.4 goals per game, led by top scorer Vincent Lecavalier. But Tampa Bay is also allowing goals to leak in at a rate of four per game, which is hampering their efforts to stay in the playoff race in the Eastern Conference.
St. Louis has been one of the NHL’s biggest surprises this season, and the Blues have been winning by scoring an average of one goal more than their opponents have been able to score. Their surprisingly solid defense has struggled recently but their offense has been up to the task, scoring 3.6 goals per game.
A trio of Atlantic Division teams are at the other end of the spectrum. Pittsburgh has gone UNDER in each of their last five games, followed by New Jersey and the New York Islanders who both have posted four UNDERS in their last five games. The Atlantic has been somewhat of a defense-dominated division this season, especially in terms of goaltending with the likes of Martin Brodeur, Rick DiPietro and Henrik Lundqvist. But the emergence of the Penguins’ Ty Conklin, who is 10-0-1 this season, may be the most unexpected development in the league.
Detroit and Ottawa are still at the top of the NHL when it comes to favorites for the Stanley Cup, as the two powerhouses waged an epic battle in Ottawa on Saturday night with the Senators coming out on top by a 3-2 score. But the Senators have to overcome another serious injury as sharpshooter Dany Heatley is out for six-to-eight weeks with a separated shoulder.
